Jerry Schoonover

Jerry Henry Schoonover, known to his friends as “Schoon”, passed from this life on Saturday, October 12, 2024. Jerry was born on October 25, 1944 in Muskogee, OK to Henry and Juanita (Hogan) Schoonover. He attended Pershing Elementary, West Junior High, and graduated with the class of 1962 from Muskogee Central High School. He also took some classes at Connors State College. From 1965-1967, he served his country in the United States Army, where he met a group of men that would form a lifelong bond. They kept in touch, visited each other as much as possible, and even traveled together at times. He cherished all of their friendships and talked of them often. Jerry returned to Muskogee to start his family with his then wife Brenda (Jones) Schoonover. He had two beautiful daughters, Regina Kay and Penny Michele. He worked for and retired from Acme Engineering. He spent over 30 years of his life at this job, and again he formed friendships that lasted his entire life. Schoon spent many of his days on the softball field playing co-ed softball, at the bowling alley or on the road with his Harley and his best friend Larry Templeton. He enjoyed serving on the Honor Guard and being a member of the VFW. He was an enthusiastic OU fan, and he also enjoyed collecting guns. He loved his community, he enjoyed his hobbies, and most of all, he cherished his friends. He was a good man with many good friends. His pride and joy, however, was his family. He loved his family and made sure they knew how proud of them he was. He enjoyed being with his family and going out to eat whenever possible. Texas Roadhouse was his favorite! He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Juanita Schoonover; his daughter, Regina Kay Pratt Schoonover; his daughter-in-law, Roberta Russell; his wife, Signe Schoonover; and his best friend, Larry Templeton. He is survived by his brother, Tommy Schoonover of Muskogee, OK; his sister, Joy Brumfield of Fort Gibson, OK; his daughter and son he always wanted, Penny Mackey and Dusty of Muskogee, OK; son-in-law, John Russell of Sallisaw, OK; his grandchildren, Darren Pratt and wife Lindsy of Muskogee, OK, Kayla Lewis and husband Heath of Muldrow, OK, Kyler Mackey and wife Sydni of Muskogee, OK, and Kalei Mackey of Muskogee, OK; one very special Aunt Sherry, several special cousins, extended family, and many friends. A viewing will be held Wednesday, October 16, 2024 from 1PM-7PM at Clifford D Garrett Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Muskogee. Family will be receiving friends from 5PM – 7PM. A celebration of Schoon’s life will be held 1:00PM, Thursday, October 17, 2024 at Oldham Memorial Baptist Church with Reverend Glen Little officiating. Dusty Mackey, Kyler Mackey, Darren Pratt, David Russell, Justin Newell, Heath Lewis, and Donnie Templeton will be serving as casket bearers. Ed Newell, Tim Andrews, Leroy Tidwell, Leon Tidwell, Jimmy Hogan, Billy Joe Hogan, Hoopie Pingleton, and Larry (Spook) Shook will serve as honorary casket bearers. Interment and committal prayers will follow at Oktaha Cemetery in Oktaha, OK.
