Myrtle M 'Punkie' Staton

Myrtle M. ‘Punkie’ (Henderson) Staton, 80, of Muskogee was born June 15, 1939 in Fort Cobb, OK to Alphonso Creed and Cora Mae (Hardesty) Henderson and received her eternal reward on Saturday, February 15, 2020 in Muskogee with her loving family by her side. Myrtle grew up in Fort Gibson where she received her formal education. She received her nickname ‘Punkie’ as a young girl and if ever asked, it was her real name. She met and later married the love of her life for 61 years, Thomas Arthur Staton on August 16, 1958 in Fort Gibson. He preceded her in death on Sunday, November 24, 2019. Myrtle was a homemaker by choice but on occasions would work outside the home as a bookkeeper and office clerk for the MFA Feed Store and tax preparer for H & R Block. She actively served at the Fort Gibson First Baptist Church until 1960, when she joined Keefeton Trinity Baptist Church serving as pianist, organist, treasurer and Sunday School Teacher. Myrtle loved to quilt, making numerous quilts, welder hats and beautiful dresses for ceramic dolls. She was a great cook and was a rancher beside her husband, TA. Her love for her family and church family was evident in everything she did. Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents and husband; son, Jimmie Edward Staton; brother Robert ‘Bob’ Henderson; nephew, David Sheffield; niece, Kathy Pirkle and brother in law, William ‘Bill’ Pirkle III. She is survived by her daughters, Judy Lanier of Tulsa and Cindy Jackson and husband Ira of Warner; sons, Tommy Staton and wife Linda of McClain and Larry Staton and wife Chris of Council Hill; her sisters, Clara Sheffield and husband Dick of Fort Gibson, Betty Pirkle of Fort Gibson, Bonnie Ballard and husband Harold of Fort Gibson and Connie Fuss and husband Mark of Pawnee; brother, Phillip Henderson and wife Leona of Fort Gibson; sisters in law, Elaine Henderson, Vickie Staton, Louise Eubanks and Geneva and husband John Eaton; grandchildren, Michael Wesley and his wife Lisa Lanier, Kenneth Lanier, Katie Lanier, Sheena and husband Noah Morgan, Shiloh Bullard, Ote Allen Staton, Clint Jackson, Hannah Staton and Brian Spencer; great grandchildren, Karissa and her three children; Amanda, Steven, Rebecca and Dakota Smith and their child Beaux, Kailyn, Cheyenne and Levi; and all of her brothers and sisters of Keefeton Trinity Baptist Church and many special friends and family of the Broadway Manor Nursing Home. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations in Myrtle’s name to the Baptist Children’s Home care of Keefeton Trinity Baptist Church 10404 US 64 Highway Muskogee, OK 74403. Viewing for Mrs. Staton will be noon-7PM Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at Clifford D Garrett Family Funeral Home in Fort Gibson. A service celebrating Myrtle’s life will be 10:00AM Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at the Keefeton Trinity Baptist Church with Reverend Dean Haley officiating. Committal prayers and interment will follow in the Agnew Cemetery. With Wesley Lanier, Kenneth Lanier, Noah Morgan, Steve Croftcheck, Joe Croftcheck and Brian Spencer serve as casket bearers. Tom Croftcheck, Clint Jackson, Kyle Shelton, J.D. Shelton, Scott Moore, Shiloh Bullard and Ote Staton will serve as honorary casket bearers.
