Signe Elin Schoonover

Signe Elin (Leathers) Schoonover, of Muskogee, OK, passed from this life on September 24, 2024. She was born in Livermore Falls, Maine on January 30, 1945, in Ma Bean’s Nursing Home, during a raging blizzard, to Dwight and Eila Wheeler. The original plan was for her to be born in the hospital in Farmington, Maine, but because of the blizzard, that was not possible. She graduated from elementary school in Manchester, Maine, and graduated from Cony High School in Augusta, Maine with the class of 1963. She also took some college classes at the University of Maine, Augusta and Westark College, which is now known as the University of Arkansas Fort Smith in Fort Smith, AR. She was married in 1961 to Gary Perry and two children, Robin Leslie Perry and Craig Marshall Perry were born of that marriage. That marriage ended in divorce in 1978. She remarried in June of 1979 and welcomed four stepchildren, Randy Leathers, James Leathers Jr., Gaylen Leathers, and Roberta (Leathers) Russell. That marriage ended in divorce in 1994. She was remarried in March of 2003 to Jerry Schoonover of Muskogee, OK and welcomed two step- children, Regina Schoonover and Penny Schoonover Mackey. Sig loved life, she loved her family, she loved her friends, and she loved all her pet dogs throughout her life. She was an avid animal lover. She worked at KFSM- TV in Fort Smith for 6 years and retired from Furniture Factory Outlet Corporate Office in Muldrow, OK in July of 2008 after almost 20 years of employment. Since retiring, she has kept herself very busy. Signe loved to travel and throughout her life she traveled to all 50 states. Her “bucket list” was complete as of October 9, 2015, when she visited the 50th state. She also enjoyed going on cruises to the Bahamas and Alaska, and flying to Cancun, Mexico several times. She had also been to several Canadian provinces, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, and British Columbia. Signe and Jerry visited her friends and family in Maine many times. They also visited the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone National Park, Mt. Rushmore, Devil’s Tower, Niagara Falls, the Hershey Factory in Hershey, PA, Washington, DC, Mt. Washington in NH, Graceland, took the ferry from Bar Harbor in Nova Scotia, and also spent some time in Seboomook, Maine. Signe and her friend, Sheri Shook, took a trip to North Dakota where they visited the International Peace Garden on the North Dakota, USA/Manitoba, Canada border. In May of 2016, she drove to Maine to visit her daughter and many friends. In February of 2016, she and her son-in-law, John, made the trip to Florida. She visited her son in Sarasota, and he visited with his friends in Melbourne. She also did line dancing with Daisy Lipe and Daisy’s Line Dancers. Her real passion was doing aerobics with Jan Phillips, and Zumba with Karla Gibson and Rachel Meinershagen at Strictly Fitness in Muskogee. She made many, many friends along the way. Signe was preceded in death by her parents, Dwight and Eila Wheeler; stepchildren, Randy Leathers, Gaylen Leathers, Roberta (Leathers) Russell, and Regina Schoonover; grandson, Josh Perry; maternal grandparents, Linne and Sam Hill; paternal grandparents, Roy and Alice Wheeler; her beloved dog, Lulu; an extra special friend, Margaret Templeton and her husband Larry. She is survived by her loving husband, Jerry Schoonover of Muskogee, OK; daughter, Robin Cooper of Jacksonville, Florida; son, Craig Perry and wife Lana of Sarasota, Florida; step-son, James Leathers Jr. and wife Kelly of Muldrow, OK; a very special son-in-law, John Russell of Sallisaw, OK; Penny Mackey and a very special son-in-law Dusty, of Muskogee, OK; sister-in-law, Joy Brumfield of Muskogee, OK; brother-in-law Thomas Schoonover of Muskogee, OK; her very special grandchildren, Jamaica Horn of Jacksonville, Florida, Renee Perry and Michelle Perry of Winthrop, Maine; Tyler Perry of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; Jerico Leathers of Muldrow, OK; Kara Cummins and family of Alma, Arkansas; Victor Leathers of Alma, Arkansas; Kayla and Heath Lewis of Muldrow, OK; Darren Pratt, Kyler, Sydni, and Kalei Mackey of Muskogee, OK; and three great-grandchildren of Florida. A graveside service to celebrate Signe's life will be 11AM, Monday, September 30, 2024 at Oktaha Cemetery in Oktaha, OK with Brother Justin Kinman officiating.
