James Boyd 'Jim' Carnagey

James Boyd ‘Jim’ Carnagey, 80, of Fort Gibson, was born November 8, 1942, to Kenneth and Lois (Steveson) Carnagey in Hominy, OK, and peacefully passed August 27, 2023, in Muskogee, OK. After graduating high school, Jim furthered his education at Northeastern State University and Tulsa University Law School graduating with his Law Degree. Jim served his clients as an attorney and tax accountant in Fort Gibson, served as the City Attorney for the town of Fort Gibson for many years, and also served as an Assistant District Attorney for Muskogee County. He sat on the Board of Directors at Fort Gibson State Bank. Jim met and later married the love of his life, Ruth Jo Cookson, on August 6, 1967, in Fort Gibson and they were married for over 54 years before her passing in 2022. He was in the United States Air Force and a proud member of Frank Gladd American Legion Post #20 in Fort Gibson, and the American Bar Association. Jim was also a lifetime member of the Northeastern State University and Oklahoma State University alumni association. He enjoyed classic cars and storytelling. Jim loved to cheer on his favorite football teams, the Dallas Cowboys and the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Recently, he took great pleasure in sitting outside with a good book and enjoying the weather. Jim’s greatest love was spending time with his family. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Jim is survived by his daughter, Kara West and husband John of Fort Gibson; grandchildren, Jake West and Peyton West, both of Fort Gibson; sister, Susan Woodward of Tulsa, OK; in-laws, Jimmy Dee and Loretta Cook of Cushing, OK; Joe and Saundra Cookson of Fort Gibson, OK; Tom and Monica Cookson of San Diego, CA; David and Brenda White of Dallas, TX; and Gary and Dana Cookson of Oologah, OK; many nieces and nephews whom he loved very much. He is preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Lois Carnagey; wife, Ruth Carnagey; brother, Bob Carnagey; brother-in-law, 'Woody' Woodward; and sister-in-law, Kelly Carnagey. The family of James Boyd Carnagey would like to thank the staffs at Northeastern Health System in Tahlequah, St. Francis in Muskogee, Pleasant Valley Nursing Center in Muskogee, and Cornerstone Healthcare Group in Muskogee for their amazing care.
