Ruby F Rowan

February 6, 1928 - October 24, 2020

Ruby F. (Nutt) Rowan was born February 6, 1928 in Fort Gibson, OK to Henry Rutherford Nutt and Frances Ann Wright Nutt being the youngest of their nine children. She went home to be with the Lord on October 24, 2020 with her family gathered around her. She would tell you that she was pampered from the beginning as her older brothers and sisters had to quit school to help work the farm, but she was able to attend school. She loved school, but especially loved basketball. She was good at it, but her parents had a hard time getting her to the games so the coach would come pick her up for the games. Times were hard and many of her friends had to quit school to help their families, as did Ruby, quitting school after eighth grade. She always regretted not finishing high school. Ruby began courting John Rowan and one of their favorite activities was taking pictures in front of the old high school, in front of cars, etc. They may have started the “selfie age”. They were married June 23, 1946 in Fort Gibson and after his death in 1994, she said, “There would never be another man like him,” and she was right. She worked in the school cafeteria when her kids were little which she greatly enjoyed, and she was able to be home when her kids were home. One of the joys of her life was music. Ruby, John, her husband, Don and Allan Scott had a band called the “Rainbow Valley Band” and they played bluegrass and country music at churches and other community events. John and Ruby really enjoyed camping at Pettit Bay where they would also entertain many campers with their music. Ruby loved kids. She taught children’s Sunday School for many years and VBS at First Baptist and Norwood Baptist. She would still sing the songs that she taught the children at church. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, Fort Gibson and the Rejoice Sunday School. She also kept her grandchildren and other children in her home while their parents worked. She would spend the day doing whatever the children needed. When the parents came to pick up their children, the kids all wanted to stay with “Nan.” When her husband, John, went to heaven in 1994, Ruby decided to fill her time by working at Wonderland Day Care. She enjoyed loving on those babies. A new law was enacted which required all childcare workers to have a high school diploma or GED and Ruby had not graduated from high school but that didn’t deter Ruby. At the age of 70 she completed her GED and was surprised with a graduation party with all the works including a class ring. She was loved by all who knew her, and she loved all she knew. She will be missed, but we are confident she is rejoicing in Heaven and we will see her again soon. She is proceeded in death by her parents, Henry R. Nutt and Frances Ann Wright Nutt; siblings, Doshie Eubanks, Eva McElmurry, Sam Nutt, Cobie Nutt, Tom Nutt, Mae Walters, Ethel Raines, Mary Rowan; and her husband John F. Rowan. She is survived by sisters-in-law, Estelle Nutt, Theda Rowan, Anna Lois Oxley; children, Larry Rowan and wife Rhonda, Glen Rowan and wife Gwen, Carol Scott and husband Allan, Rick Rowan and wife Denise, 9 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild, extended family and many friends. A service celebrating Ruby’s life will be held 10:30AM Friday, October 30, 2020 at the Fort Gibson First Baptist Church with her sons, Glen and Larry officiating. Committal prayers and interment will follow in the Fort Gibson National Cemetery with her grandchildren serving as casket bearers. The family of Ruby F. Rowan has entrusted her care, services and burial to Clifford D Garrett Family Funeral Home, Fort Gibson. 918-478-2555. Online condolences may be left for the family at clifforddgarrettfamilyfh.com
